En gård vid foten av fjället
Fäviken covers around 8400 hectares of land – mountainside, waterways and forests on the eastern slope of Åreskutan. It has been owned by the Brummer family since 2003.
The farm came into being at the end of the 1800s. Before then the area just had a few crofts and the local farmers primarily used Åreskutan’s northern slopes for summer grazing. The first buildings were constructed in 1880; for about ten years the farm was run as a dairy school by an agricultural society, before being sold to a Norwegian company, Verdalsbruket.
In 1916 a Norwegian by the name of Bernhard Mona was employed as an administrator on the estate. Mona worked as an employee up until 1934, when he was given the opportunity to buy the entire estate, which at that time was around 34,000 hectares. He and a partner, John Ocklind, bought the land, making the duo the owners of one of Sweden’s largest privately owned properties.
The land and the forest were not particularly profitable and conditions on the farm were relatively basic for the time. A milestone came in 1940, when water rights in Lake Kallsjön were sold to the city of Stockholm for a considerable sum. This meant the financial situation improved considerably and the farm was run successfully until 1964, when it was divided into two. The partners went their separate ways and shortly after this, Bernhard’s son Bengt took over.
It was during Bengt Mona’s time as owner and manager that the seed of the experiential activities that are run today was planted – hunting, dining and fishing for paying guests.
A brilliant idea
1994 saw the start of something that has grown and become a vital part of the estate’s identity. Fäviken Game Fair is a wilderness fair that was originally inspired by the many similar events organised each year in the British Isles. The Game Fair now attracts more than 30,000 visitors over three days at the end of July.
Since the present owners bought the property there have been extensive renovations and adaptations, so that the farm is more suitable for contemporary activities. Innovations include the restaurant and overnight accommodation.
